Akwaya : Nigerian Herdsmen Attack Leaves Seven Soldiers Dead

The incident according to a report of the Divisional Officer of Akwaya, occurred on January 3, 2025 in the border locality of Bakinjaw village.

Friday 3rd January was a black day in Akwaya as seven Cameroonian soldiers (five army and two gendarmes) were shot dead by sophisticatedly armed Fulani herdsmen from neigbouring Nigeria. According to the DO of Akwaya, Augustine Ewe Mbua, on Thursday 2nd January, a contingent of armed Fulani rebels from Nigeria reportedly penetrated into the Cameroonian territory and launched a deadly attach on Cameroonian defence and security forces stationed at the borderline in Agwa quarter in Bakinjaw village under the Messaga-Ekol Court Area in Akwaya North, Manyu Division in the South West Region. “During the fire exchange, one Fulani rebel dropped dead and the rest retreated back to base in Nigeria neighborhoods with intention to go beef up their man power and come back for offensive reprisals. The same gang armed with automatic rifles stormed the same Agwa quarter and launched a deadly arson on our forces. Unfortunately, seven of our soldiers are reported dead,” the DO’s statement read. 
The administrator pointed out that Akwaya Subdivision has often come under hostile and aggressive attacks from Nigerian Fulani herdsmen. He indicated that whenever such attacks happen, the casualties are always immeasurable on the side of the indigenous population.  Though the administrative authority says investigations have been opened into the matter, he nonetheless stated that the presumed reason for the attacks lies on the usual Fulani quest to occupy vast portion of land for cattle grazing through conquest.
