United Nations : Guterres Calls On Rwandan Forces To Withdraw

On January 26, 2025, the UN scribe also demanded that Rwanda should halt her support for M23 fighters.
United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has called on Rwandan forces to withdraw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as fighting rages on between government soldiers and M23 rebels. On Sunday, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, « The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the escalating violence and calls on the Rwanda Defense Forces to stop supporting the M23 and withdraw from DRC territory». M23 fighters backed by several thousand Rwandan troops have been advancing rapidly toward the city, which lies along DRC's eastern border. In a statement after three U.N. peacekeepers were killed in eastern DRC within 48 hours, Guterres emphasized that « attacks against United Nations personnel may constitute a war crime».
During an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council session Sunday, permanent member states France, Britain and the United States called on Rwanda to pull its forces back. But others, including China and the African Nations holding rotating council seats, did not specifically name Kigali. The UN Security Council has yet to accuse Rwanda of taking part directly in the conflict, simply underlining the importance of the DRC's territorial integrity.
Congolese Foreign Minister, Therese Kayikwamba Wagner went further to urge the Council to impose sweeping economic and political sanctions on Kigali.
