The massive rehabilitation works by Aéroports Du Cameroun, ADC S.A. worth 700 million FCFA changed the fortunes of the airport during Pope Leo XIV’s April 16, 2026 visit.
For nearly a decade, the Bamenda-Bafut Airport in Cameroon’s North West Region was a ghost of its former self. Once the pride of the region and a bustling hub for travelers across Cameroon, the facility had succumbed to a "weathered strip of tarmac," a casualty of the socio-political crisis that has gripped the region since 2016. Its runways were cracked, its terminal windows shattered, and its halls echoed with the silence of a suspended aviation era. The last commercial flight had departed in 2020, leaving the region isolated from the nation's primary air corridors.
Dividends Of Papal Visit
However, the announcement of the historic visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on April 16, 2026, served as the ultimate catalyst for change. What followed was an "architectural renaissance" that saw the airport transformed from a relic of conflict into a modern aeronautical hub. A transformation worth 700 million FCFA, which now stands as a permanent strategic asset for the North West Region - and Cameroon in general.
Race Against Time
The restoration of Bamenda-Bafut was not a gradual project; it was a high-pressure, 100-day mobilization led by Aéroports Du Cameroun (ADC S.A.). Under the leadership of Mr. Ngono Jean Camille, Director of Maintenance for ADC, teams began working in December 2025 to ensure the facility was not only operational but pristine.
"We had to anticipate everything to avoid being rushed," Mr. Ngono explained to Cameroon Tribune Online on April 15, 2026 at Bamenda-Bafut Airport - just 24 hours before the Papal arrival. "The runway had been out of use for so long... several cracks appeared. Our goal was to rehabilitate the runway by bridging and sealing all the cracks, ensuring that the runway suffered no structural damage."
While the 51st Military Engineering Regiment focused on the critical access roads leading to the airport, ADC took on the Herculean task of reviving the platform's core infrastructure. A total of 31 critical projects were executed, ranging from heavy structural repairs to aesthetic refinements. Crucially, this 700 million FCFA investment was entirely self-funded by ADC S.A., demonstrating a robust commitment to national infrastructure.
Transformation Of Terminal
The most visible changes occurred within the passenger terminal. Visitors returning to the airport after years of absence were greeted by a building that has been entirely repainted, both inside and out. The shattered glassware that once symbolized the region’s decay were replaced, and the floors polished to a mirror-like sheen.
The renovations included a complete refurbishment of the VIP lounge with premium furniture and a refined aesthetic designed to host the Sovereign Pontiff and international delegations. A complete overhaul of the restroom blocks and the hydraulic network, ensuring the airport is now water-autonomous with its own borehole system. And the total replacement of interior, exterior, and apron lighting, ensuring the safety of night operations and a welcoming atmosphere for evening arrivals.
Technical, Safety Upgrades
Beyond the fresh paint and polished floors, the airport underwent a significant technological upgrade. The Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) integrated satellite-based flight procedures (RNAV/GNSS) specifically for the event. These "navaids" are not temporary fixtures; they represent a permanent upgrade to the region’s aviation capabilities.
The control tower was also modernized. "They installed navigation aid instruments, the PAPIs (Precision Approach Path Indicators), and the Glide," said Mr. Ngono. "They updated the frequency. All these elements allow for proper monitoring... there is now a seamless coordination between the tower operator and the pilot."
Safety was the highest priority, given the high-profile nature of the guest. The runway markings were brought up to international standards, and five separate test flights - including Camair-Co 737s - were conducted to ensure the structural integrity of the tarmac. While the Pope’s primary aircraft (an A320) arrived in Yaoundé, the Bamenda-Bafut runway was perfectly dimensioned to receive the Camair-Co 737 "shuttle" that brought His Holiness to the North West.
Symbol Of Resilience, Economic Hope
The significance of April 16, 2026, extends far beyond the religious ceremony. For the people of Bamenda and Bafut, the reopening of the airport is an assertion of State functionality and a beacon of hope for a return to normalcy.
The security perimeter, established by the Presidential Guard and the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR), created a "sterile zone" that allowed for a safe and dignified visit. However, the enduring legacy of this project is the preservation of a strategic asset. With a capacity to hold between 60,000 and 80,000 people, the airport is now prepared to handle large-scale commercial and regional traffic once again.
The Archbishop of Bamenda, Andrew Nkea, who oversaw the local preparations for the Papal Mass, noted that while the event expected 5,000 to 6,000 attendees, the facility was ready for many more. This readiness is a testament to the scale of the restoration.
Bridge To The Future
The 700 million FCFA invested by ADC S.A. did more than just "fix a road" or "paint a building." As journalists and local leaders observed, it "built a bridge to the future." The Bamenda-Bafut Airport is no longer a casualty of crisis; it is a functional pillar for the North West Region’s economic renaissance.
As the echoes of the Papal visit fade, the humming of aircraft engines and the movement of passengers will hopefully remain, signaling a new chapter of connectivity, commerce, and peace for the region.
