The first-ever Artificial Intelligence Week of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation was formally opened in Yaounde on June 9, 2026 by Minister Madeleine Tchuinte.
The Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, MINRESI, led by the Minister, Dr. Madeleine Tchuinte, on June 9, 2026 launched the ministry’s first-ever Artificial Intelligence Week in Yaoundé. Financed and technically backed by the French Embassy, the five-day summit (June8-12, 2026) marks a critical transition for the nation. Moving from a passive consumer of global technology to an active producer of local innovations.
Driver Of Economic Competiveness
Addressing an audience of local innovators and French delegates from the University of Bourgogne Europe, Dr. Tchuinte stated that AI is now a determining factor in economic competitiveness and technological sovereignty. "We have the problems, we have the talents," she affirmed, highlighting the need for a sovereign, "frugal AI" designed by Cameroonians to tackle specific regional hurdles in smart agriculture, public health, and administration.
Structural Shift
A massive structural shift is underway within Cameroon’s scientific community. With the launch of the nation’s inaugural Artificial Intelligence Week by the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, MINRESI, the focus has square-focused on a singular, game-changing objective. Weaponizing generative AI to supercharge and accelerate academic research.
End Of Six-Month Pipeline
The traditional pace of scientific publishing is about to become obsolete. According to Professor Christopher Cruz, an AI and knowledge-modeling expert from the University of Bourgogne Europe, generative AI fundamentally collapses the timeline of data synthesis. "Between the first time you have an idea and the international publication of papers, the pipeline is shrinking," Cruz stated. "What used to take six months to a year can now be streamlined into just a few weeks."
By automating deep literature reviews, hypothesis generation, and manuscript drafting, AI acts as an intellectual amplifier, allowing scientists to bypass mechanical administrative bottlenecks and focus entirely on core discovery.
Tripling Academic Output
The quantitative impact of this technological deployment is unprecedented. Dr. Patrice Ele Abiama, Permanent Secretary of the National Committee for Technology Development, CNDT revealed that AI is triggering an entire paradigm shift in how local intelligence is scaled.
With the deployment of these tools, the national system projects that individual researcher output will skyrocket from a historical baseline of 5 to 6 peer-reviewed articles per year up to 15 or 20 articles annually. This exponential increase in visible, high-level data is designed to push Cameroon into a dominant position within the global knowledge economy.
Applied Agritech, Health
According to the Scientific Attaché in French Embassy in Cameroon, Prof. Stephanie Mailles Viard, AI cannot be confined to computer science labs. Participants agree on the need to hold more specialized workshops to train researchers to apply frugal and contextualized AI directly to localized, field-specific emergencies.
Like deploying predictive algorithms to analyze crop patterns, soil health, and climate variations. Utilizing natural language processing and data science to track epidemiology and manage patient metrics under local infrastructure limits. And processing massive environmental datasets to track ecosystem degradation in real-time.
The Human Safeguard
While the efficiency gains are undeniable, the summit established a strict professional boundary. AI is a collaborator, not a replacement. Professor Cruz issued a critical caveat to the gathered young innovators, reminding them that professional ethics must dictate AI use. The automaton analyzes and organizes, but human critical thinking and local cultural context must ultimately validate the science, Prof. Cruz insisted.
