South West: Denizens Equipped On Disaster Risk Management

Buea (Fako) - The capacity of community focal points, civil society organisations, and community leaders in Buea have been strengthened in disaster risk management, climate adaptation and sustainable resilience. For four days at the Buea Council premises (June 16 to 20, 2026), participants deepened their understanding on the fundamental principles of disasters risk reduction and climate change adaptation. They were given practical skills on the effective relay of messages at the community levels, developed action plan for knowledge dissemination and follow-up for sustained community engagement, and strengthened their mastery on feedback and reporting channels to ensure accurate and documented monitoring of local activities. The event organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Civil Protection Unit of the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT) brought together over 40 participants. The team separated in four groups and made visits to some areas like Bokwaongo, Buea Town and Molyko. As part of the programme, participants undertook a two-day field sensitization exercise during which they engaged directly with community members, raising awareness on disaster risks and the importance of adopting preventive measures.
