2026 Women’s AFCON: Pivotal Group D Game This Sunday

T he 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is run­ ning smoothly in Morocco, with each of the 16 partici­ pating nations eager to go far in the competition. Group D; Cameroon, Ghana, Cabo Verde and Mali; began their campaigns on July 29, 2026. Cameroon beat Mali 2-1, while Ghana defeated Cabo Verde 2-0. Ghana, thus, top the group with three points and a +2 goal difference, while Ca­ meroon sit second with three points and a +1 goal difference. Interestingly, these two nations will meet on Sun­ day, August 2, 2026, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium-Casablanca, Morocco, in what has been described as the pivotal match of the group. The win­ ner will have the better chance of fi­ nishing top in the group ahead of the final pool fixtures. A victory would evidently secure qualification for the next round for either side, while a draw could keep the suspense alive until the last group game. Sunday’s match thus promises to be tough. Both Ghana and Cameroon have strong pedigrees in WAFCON, yet neither has managed to lift the trophy. The Black Queens are making their 12th appearance and have rea­ ched the final three times; 1998, 2002 and 2006. Cameroon have competed in every WAFCON edition since the tournament’s inception in 1998 except the last edition, giving them 13 appearances.
