Heavy Rains: Littoral On High Alert

The Littoral Region is on heightened alert as heavy rainfall continues to expose several communities to flooding, landslides and waterborne diseases. Heavy rains over the weekend left several parts of Douala submerged, disrupting movement and forcing some residents to remain indoors as roads, bridges and markets were inundated by rising water. According to the latest weather forecasts, August is traditionally one of the wettest months of the year which presents increased risks, particularly in areas with poor drainage and communities located in low lying zones. Douala I, II and Douala IV are among the areas expected to receive significant rainfall. Neighbourhoods including Bonabéri (especially Mambanda), Bali, Bonapriso and New Bell are being closely moni­ tored. Unlike these areas where flooding remains a major concern, Douala III faces a greater risk of landslides. Areas including Nyalla and neighbourhoods around PK8, PK9, PK10, PK11, PK12, PK13, PK14, PK15 and PK16 are considered vulnerable and are under surveil­ lance. Douala V is also particularly exposed to flooding.
