“A Single Tremor Does Not Mean An Eruption”

Dr. Mafany Teke, Director of the Regional Centre of Scientific Research and Innovation for the South West Region.

What are some of the physical indicators that may indicate an eruption? For residents along the slopes of Mount Cameroon, there are some physical indicators that may help them know that the mountain is buil ding up towards an eruption. For example, if we have sustained swarms of earthquakes and harmo nic vibrations, that may be an indica tion that the mountain is building up towards an eruption. Isolated brief shakes may occur periodically. Ho wever, if they become persistent and increase in frequency, this is indica tive of some active subsurface fluid or magmatic movement. Environ mental and geothermal changes may also give a clue. For example, unex plained drying up of springs, sudden changes in water temperature or cla rity or localized drying or browning of vegetation on the upper reaches of the mountain due to subsurface heating and gas release may be an indication that an eruption is immi nent. Also, the smell of sulphurous gases that smell like rotten eggs if detected near fissures or areas that are close to the volcano may be an indication that an eruption is building up. Official updates from scientific authorities and disaster manage ment bodies such as the Ministry of Territorial Administration should al ways serve as a primary guide for ac tions. Is the incident on Mount Came roon on October 23, 2026, an in dication of an eruption? A single tremor and a short micro- earthquake swarm, indicates that the magmatic system is active. But it does not automatically mean an eruption is imminent. Volcanic sys tems like that of Mount Cameroon frequently undergo periods of inter nal pressurization and readjustment without reaching the surface. To de termine whether an eruption is ap proaching, volcanologists and geos cientists like those of the Centre for Geophysical and Volcanological Re search of the Institute of Geological and Mining Research under the tute lage of the Ministry of Scientific Re search and Innovation evaluate a se ries of complementary monitoring factors. For example, the seismic characteristics are taken into consi deration wherein the experts moni tor the depth, frequency and type of seismic events. If they observe a transition from deep sharp volcano- tectonic earthquakes to shallow long period signals or continuous volcanic harmonic tremor that may indicate that magma is migrating towards shallow depths beneath the surface.
