Ring Road: Gov’t Assures Of Imminent Construction

The population of the North West region have been assured that the Ring Road will be constructed in the nearest future. The assurance was given by the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi who was in Bamenda recently.  Tuesday May 16, 2017 was a busy day for the Minister and representatives from the World Bank and African Development Bank who spent the whole day visiting portions of the Ring Road to get first-hand information so as to know what to do next.
From Bamenda to Ndop, Jakiri and finally to Kumbo, the team made various stops to inspect culverts, bridges and the road itself. It was evident that effective work was ongoing on the road as various contractors and their heavy duty equipment were visible doing work.  At the end of the inspection visit, the Minister disclosed that he was satisfied with the work done so far. He said the government has allocated more than FCFA 5 billion to ensure the consistency of works on the Ring Road and the pavement of other roads. He said the government is doing its best to ensure that no portion of the ring road is cut off be it in the rainy or dry season.  
 During an evaluation meeting on Wednesday May 17, the Minister equally got first-hand information about other roads in the region. Presenting a situation analysis of roads in the region, the Regional Delegate of Public Works for North West, Ndang Denis disclosed that according to the 2016 road maintenance programme in the region, work on some roads are ongoing while others are yet to start.  He regretted that some contractors have abandoned their worksites, of which he said warning letters have been served.

Monsieur le ministre, au terme de l’évaluation des programmes d’entretien routier 2016-2017 dans le Nord-Ouest, que retenez-vous ?
Il faut retenir que les entreprises retenues dans le cadre du programme 2016 en cours d’exécution se sont effectivement mobilisées pour 98% des cas. Le niveau de service des infrastructures routières concernées s’améliore. Celles qui ont été contractualisées dans la cadre du programme 2017 se mobilisent encore. Je dois reconnaitre qu’elles ont connu du retard, en raison de cette perturbation que la région a connue. Les entreprises ont parfois été empêchées d’exercer leurs activités. Je lance donc un appel en direction de ceux et celles qui se livrent à cet exercice-là, qu’ils bloquent le développement de cette partie du pays, dans la mesure où, si une infrastructure routière doit être aménagée en six mois, il ne faudrait pas qu’on l’aménage en 12 mois. Ça nous fait perdre de l’argent, ça nous fait perdre aussi en réalisation économique.
