Buea: South West Teachers Commended For Dedication

Teachers in the Region have been commended for their dedication to duty and for keeping the light of education burning despite the challenges facing the region.

T he commendation was made du­ ring the regional commemoration of the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, held at the Buea Council Hall on Monday, October 5, 2026. The celebration, held under the theme: “Supporting Teachers: 60 Years of Pro­ tecting the Profession, Enhancing its Status and Building our Future", was chaired by South West Governor, Ber­ nard Okalia Bilai. Addressing teachers from the Ministries of Secondary Education, Basic Educa­ tion and Employment and Vocational Training, the South West Regional De­ legate for Basic Education, Elangwe Rose Bume, commended teachers for upholding professional ethics and en­ suring the continuity of education, even in difficult circumstances. “South West teachers, thank you for your service,” she said. Elangwe Rose Bume stressed the need for better working conditions to enable teachers to perform their duties more effecti­ vely. She called for stronger security in schools, increased allowances for teachers serving in enclaved areas, and the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms and sanitation facili­ ties. South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, also praised the education com­ munity for its determination and com­ mitment to the indispensable role of education in national development.
