Promotion of Competition and Consumer Protection:CEMAC Experts Seek Policy Harmonisation
This is the object of a regional conference which took place in Douala on November 21 and 22.
Experts from CEMAC, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principe are currently meeting in Douala to develop and consolidate the legal and institutional framework in view of harmonizing policies on the promotion of competition and consumer protection. The meeting organised by the Commission of the Central African Economic Monetary Community with contribution from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the EU, will also explore ways of rendering the CEMAC Community Competiveness Supervisory body operational and ensure the implementation of the regional competition rules.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the conference on Tuesday November 21, at the Sawa hotel in Douala, the Minister of Commerce Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana said Cameroon has an arsenal of laws promoting competition and protecting consumers notably through the creation of the National competition Commission, the National Consumer Council and the Appeals Committee for the Arbitration of disputes concerning consumer protection. But said a vacuum exist at the sub-regional level, hence the need for the harmonization of policies.
