Tackling COVID-19 : Canada Financially Supports Schools Reopening

The High Commissioner of Canada to Cameroon, Richard Bale announced the support during the audience Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute granted him on August 26, 2020.
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Canada has been solidly behind the government of Cameroon, supporting specifically the educational sector.
The High Commissioner of Canada to Cameroon, Richard Bale disclosed to the press in Yaounde, on August 26, 2020 after discussions with Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute that, “ We have just announced an additional funding of one million Canadian Dollars which is about FCFA 420 million which will be channelled through the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). This will focus on the safe reopening of schools in October 2020.” He said the announced funding was the second significant assistance Canada was giving Cameroon through UNICEF, stating that the first funding came to help the opening of classes that were taking examinations in June 2020.
The audience therefore, served as an occasion for the Canadian diplomat to describe to the Prime Minister the support of his country in a variety of ways to boost Cameroon’s response efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. With regard to the specific domain of education, Richard Bale said, “From our own experience in North America, when you re-open schools which is a necessary action to take during the pandemic, you also run some risks of seeing an increase in cases of the pandemic.” The two officials used the occasion to dis...
