What is your appraisal of Government’s implementation of the Major National Dialogue recommendations one year on?
A lot still has to be done but I am more interested in the implementation of the special status and the reconstruction of the North West and South West regions. As for the special status, I know that the regional elections are upcoming and we hope that it goes on well in the regions given that there is no much euphoria. The reconstruction of the two restive regions is a laudable government initiative. Many people are eager to see it materialise. Civil Society Organisations are also very excited with the reconstruction plan and I think that it is a step in the right direction if the government gets the reconstruction right. I equally think the reconstruction might also help in pacifying the emotions of some people in the North West and South West regions with grievances.
Could you present an overview of how the population of the restive regions are welcoming the implementation of the Major National Dialogue recommendations?
The population of the North West and South West regions are receiving the implementation of the National Dialogue recommendations with mix feelings. It actually depends on the conviction and ideology of the person you talk to. Those who believe that the problem can be solved within the ambit of the country will tell you that something good is coming. Talking from the perspective of someone who took part in the Major National Dialogue, a lot has to be done. We are hoping that the implementation of government reconstruction plan will put smiles on many faces.
Government is intensifying and fine-tuning efforts towards finding lasting solutions to the socio-political crisis plaguing the once soothing North West and South West regions of the country. What are some of the major challenges of this peace process?
Taking in to consideration the fact that the conflict is still ongoing, it makes it very difficult for government to implement some of the Major National Dialogue recommendations. Those instigating the conflicts are against government...
