Mozambique : Loyal Troops Recapture Mocimboa da Praia

The home of one of Africa’s biggest natural gas projects was retaken from insurgence after an operation spearheaded by the Rwandan army.
Rwandan and Mozambican forces have retaken the strategic port town of Mocimboa da Praia in northern Mozambique from insurgent forces, who had held the town for more than a year. The victory that was masterminded by the Rwandan troops, happened before a regional intervention force arrived the country to join the fight against the insurgents, who are affiliated to Islamic State.
“The port city of Mocimboa da Praia, a major stronghold of the insurgency for more than a year has been captured by Rwandan and Mozambican security forces,” the Rwanda Defence Forces said in a tweet. Forces’ spokesman Colonel Ronald Rwivanga confirmed the information to AFP news agency, saying “yes Mocimboa da Praia has fallen”. Colonel Rwivanga also said in a text message sent to Aljazeera news agency that Mocimboa da Praia “was the last stronghold of the insurgents, marking the end of the first phase of counter-insurgency operations which is dislodging insurgents from the stronghold.” Though the insurgents have not yet commented, the news is seen as a major gain for Mozambique in its fight against insurgents.
It was not clear how much combat was required to re-occupy the town. Some sources said the insurgents had abandoned the town without intense fighting, as their military base is some distance away.
