Burundi : UN Scribe For Peace In Bujumbura

After the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, in charge of peacekeeping issues, Jean Pierre Lacroix has arrived in Bujumbura. It is the first visit of a top UN official to the country since 2015.  Hours after his arrival on Monday, October 25, 2021, Mr Lacroix met with the Ministers of the Interior, Defense and the Burundian Chief of Staff during which he was given a detailed report on the major progress made by the country in the domain of human rights and democracy by the Minister of Interior. According to a source at the UN, discussions during Monday’s meeting with the Minister of Defense focused on securing the border between Burundi and the DRC, and also on the Central African crisis where a roadmap for peace was adopted in September by the Heads of State of the Great Lakes region. 
RFI reports that another important issue that was on their agenda was the sending of a second contingent of Burundian peacekeepers to Central African Republic. Though the issue had been discussed several weeks before, it was put back on the table at the request of Bujumbura authorities because according to a UN official who asked not to be cited, income from peacekeeping missions abroad is one of the main source of foreign currency inflow to its economy following a drastic fall in the prices of its agricultural products especially coffee.
