African Union : Sudan Suspended

The African Union (AU) has announced the suspension of Sudan from all its activities after the country’s military overthrew the civilian-led transitional government in a coup on Monday, 25, October 2021, just weeks before Burhan was supposed to hand over the leadership of the Sovereign Council, to a civilian. The information was tweeted by the African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. In the communique, the pan-African body said the suspension would be in place until “the effective restoration” of the transitional authority steering the country towards elections. Discussing via video conference in an extraordinary meeting, the members hailed the release of the Prime Minister Abdallar Hamdok and called for the total liberation of all members of his government.
The decision by the African Union comes just hours after the World Bank followed the United States in suspending aid to Sudan following the widely condemned military takeover that has shattered the two years fragile power-sharing arrangement between the military and civilians after mass streets demonstrations removed longtime President, Omar al-Bashir from power in April 2019.
