Olembe Stadium: Parliament Wants It Christened “Paul Biya Stadium”

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril made the plea on December 10, 2021 during the closing plenary sitting of the House for November 2021 ordinary session.
“On behalf of all Members of the National Assembly, I have the singular honour to plead with deference that the Olembe Stadium be christened Paul Biya Stadium,” Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril said. He further justified that, “The Olembe Stadium, a veritable architectural jewel, which is one of the best in Africa should, indeed, bear the name of the Great Builder who is no one else but President Paul Biya.”
The House Speaker spoke on December 10, 2021 as he presided at the closing plenary sitting of the National Assembly for the November 2021 ordinary session in the presence of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute who led a battery of cabinet ministers and other dignitaries. Cameroon, he recalled, will host the final phase of the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, AFCON TotalEnergies 2021 starting from January 9, 2022.
The opening match is programmed to be played in the Olembe Stadium. Rt. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril said Cameroon is ready to host the event with state-of-the-art facilities and laid emphasis on security and health conditions. He acknowledged that the tournament will whip up emotions but called on Cameroonians to show proof of fair play and discipline by remaining calm. They therefore have to hold fast to what makes Cameroon, the land of legendary hospitality and unique.
The plenary sitting opened with the declaration of the Network of Women Parliamentarians of Cameroon. They condemned the attacks perpetrated by separatists against the Ekondo Titi High School on November 24, 2021 that led to the death of three students and one teacher. They recalled that the attack came to add to that of Mother Francisca International Academy in Kumba on October 24, 2020 which left seven pupils death.
