“No Violence Against Women Initiative,” Novawi, was released to the public in December 2021 by the charity, RuWCED Cameroon.
The not-for-profit grassroots organisation, the Rural Women Centre for Education and Development, RuWCED Cameroon, in December 2021, released “an innovative digital intervention to help Cameroonian women and girls fight Gender-based Violence, GBV.” Also meant to report cases of Violence Against Women and Girls, VAWG, the No Violence Against Women Initiative, Novawi application, is already available on Google Playstore.
“Novawi permits users to report cases of VAWG and GBV to trusted people, the police or professionals for prompt, effective intervention. The App is free and can be installed on any Internet-enabled Android phone, tablet or device,” explains Dr Glory Lueong, RuWCED Cameroon founder.
While signing up for the App, users are required to include the telephone numbers of trusted people to be alerted for free by pressing the panic button in the event of violence. “Additionally, the App provides users with useful and regularly updated information on VAWG and GBV. The App does not only report GBV and VAWG violence, but also provides useful information, amongst others, on how to prevent it in the first place,” Lueong notes.
A 2020 ReliefWeb report says 84 per cent of Cameroonian women admitted suffering some form of violence before. “Abuses are perpetrated directly or indirectly by a partner in intimate relationship as a result of suspicion of cheating, heavy alcohol and drug consumption, frustration caused by poverty, and education disparity,” writes Mbinkar Emmanuel Mengndze.
