Parliament : Elective Plenary Sitting Today

The eldest member of the Senate and National Assembly shall today March 18, 2022 chair a plenary sitting that is devoted to the election of members of the bureau of the Houses. In accordance with the standing orders of the House, the eldest member heads the provisional bureau that chairs plenary sitting till a permanent bureau is elected. The stakes of the March session of Parliament usually border on the election of bureau members which shall for a year pilot the decisions at the legislative arm of the State. Of course, bills will be examined and voted, members of government grilled on expenditure and projects, and networking opportunities organised during the session which according to legislation lasts 30 days.
The bureau of the Senate and National Assembly is each made up of 23 members, comprising a House Speaker/Senate President, a Senior Deputy House Speaker/Senior Vice President, five Deputy House Speakers/Vice Presidents, four Questors and 12 Secretaries. Simply put, the plenary of today will vote persons that will fill the aforementioned positions. Worthy of note are the gender and sociological aspects that have to be respected in the voting of the bureau members. In the course of last year, one of the five Deputy Speakers of the National Assembly, Hon. Emilia Monjowa Lifaka and the Vice President of the Senate, Senator Sylvestre Naah Ondoa, journeyed to the world beyond. Today’s election will thus present the members of the two lawmaking Houses who will be getting into the bureau to fill the positions.
