Consumer Goods : Government Determined To Boost Supply

The government of Cameroon is determined to ensure the availability of raw materials for industries and supply of consumer goods in the local markets in the face of the volatility of the prices of raw materials in the international scene, as well as the unprecedented and prolonged deregulation of global market supply chains. The situation started with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and has now been aggravated by the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The urgency to face the challenges posed by Covid -19 and the Ukraine war made the cabinet meeting to be essentially dedicated to ensuring stability in the national market and living conditions of the population. Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute presided at the cabinet meeting. He situated the international context within which the meeting was held stating that Russia and Ukraine that are currently in conflict are great producers of raw materials, the two countries are  the world’s grain basket as they produce over 30 per cent of wheat, a cereal that is the staple food for almost 35 per cent of the world’s population.  Farm inputs like fertilizer from Ukraine. 
On ways of tackling the situation in concrete terms, the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana presented a statement on the updated measures taken to boost supply of consumer goods on the market. He stated that Cameroon was highly dependent on imports  which make the country  vulnerable to the international market vagaries.  The products the country mostly imports because domestic production cannot meet demand include rice, flour, fish, sugar, oil, cooking salt and building materials. On measures, he cited government subsidies to prices of fuel, cooking gas, tax exoneration of products like wheat, rice etc
