After a few months of detente between, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, tension seems to have returned along the 217 km border that separates the two countries. Early this week, the Democratic Republic of Congo announce its intension to suspend all RwandAir flights and summoned Kigali's ambassador. The decision comes after DRC authorities accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group. In a statement after an extraordinary meeting of the Superior Defence Council chaired by Congolese, President Felix Tshisekedi, the Kinshasa government said, there are clear evidence that Kigali was backing the March 23 Movement. The Congolese government alleges that the Rwandan government is supporting M23 rebels in the country’s east, citing military equipment apparently found, along with testimonies from locals and images captured by soldiers.
Though Rwanda has denied these accusations, there has been renewed clashes between the Congolese army and the militia in the east of the country. These clashes do not only risk ruining the peace process being mediated by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who holds the rotating presidency of the East African Community group, but the relative peace the population of both countries have been enjoying for some months. A full scale war would lead to the loss of lives and also damage the two countries cross border trade which is revamping after three important agreements were signed in June last year by the two head of states.
