Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, to open discussions with the different University Teachers’ Trade Unions in order to bring the prolonged strike to an end. Buhari gave the directive on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 after receiving reports from the relevant government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) involved in the ongoing efforts to resolve the face-off with the University Unions.
The strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), began in February 14, 2022 and was later followed by three other University-based unions. After several months of fruitless negotiations, the President on Tuesday summoned his collaborators to get clarifications on why the strike had persisted for too long. At the end of Tuesday’s briefing, the President ordered the Education Minister to ensure that the areas of disagreements were ironed out within 14 days and a report sent back to him. Apart from the Education Minister, other government officials like the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige was asked to attend the crisis meetings as well as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.
