Health experts have thrown more light on the disease which is mostly caused by a bacterial infection.
Each year, on September 13, the world commemorates the World Sepsis Day. Medics say it is an important Day because it is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against sepsis which accounts for at least eight million deaths worldwide annually. Yet, depending on the country and education, sepsis is known only to 7-50 per cent of the people. An Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Medicine at the Yaounde Emergency Hospital, Dr Ngouatna Djeumakou Serge Rawlings, says it is also poorly known that Sepsis can be prevented by vaccination and that early recognition and treatment reduces Sepsis mortality by 50 per cent. This lack of knowledge makes sepsis the number one cause of death worldwide.
Dr Ngouatna says Sepsis is caused by an infection, whether bacterial (salmonella), viral (Coronavirus), parasitic (plasmodium) or fungal, (candida albicans). This infection, he says, leads to an inappropriate response from the body which will cause the dysfunctioning of one or more organs. While noting that it is a life-threatening bacterial infection, there seem to be no local statistics of cases of Sepsis in the country. But an unpublished document indicates that in Cameroon, 33 per cent of people had Sepsis and 21 per cent had Septic shock. It is also revealed that anyone can get an infection, and almost any infection can lead to sepsis. Although Sepsis cannot be spread, an infection can lead to sepsis, and one can spread some infections to other people.
