Extra-gential Endometriosis : When Other Body Parts Bleed During Menstruation!

Endometriosis is a disease of the female reproductive system in which cells similar to those in the endometrium, that is, the layer of tissue that normally covers the inside of the uterus, grows outside the uterus. Most of the time, the tissue grows in the pelvic area and in some rare and uncommon occasions, the tissues grow in other organs of the body. At the just-ended International Congress in Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery, USA-based expert, Professor Camran Nezhat, said early treatment is crucial, because when endometriosis worsens over time, it spreads throughout the body, leading to the extreme condition of extra-genital endometriosis, in which the disease invades other vital organs.
Pr. Camran Nezhat explained that some of the strange things he has seen during his medical career are extra-genital endometriosis in which some body parts bleed during a woman’s monthly period. Usually, endometriosis may cause women to have painful periods accompanied by back pain, constipation or infertility, but Pr. Nezhat said when the tissue grows on other body parts, it causes further complications. He explained that in situations where endometriosis tissues grow in the nose, it leads to nose bleeding during menstrual periods. Some have it on their cystic nerves causing pains even when the woman is not on her period. Sometimes, it grows around the kidney thereby causing it to die. Also, if endometriosis is found on the bladder, the patient has blood in her urine each time she is menstruating. The tissue can grow in the heart, brain, chest wall, liver and even the diaphragm causing a woman to experience pain on her shoulder during menstruation.
