Gender-Based Violence : Joint Programme Launched

The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena Ondoa nee Obama, has reiterated the need for partners to work together in a coordinated manner, to better respond to the problems faced by women in Cameroon. She was speaking on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 in Yaounde during a ceremony to launch the Joint- Government/technical and financial partners/civil society to combat gender-based violence. This is within a new programme that will help in the operationalisation of the national development strategy plan. Discussing under the theme; “strengthening measures for protection against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and the holistic management of survivors in Cameroon", Marie Therese Abena said the project demonstrates the interest and importance attached to improving the status of women in the fight against gender-based violence in the country.  She explained that gender-based violence, also known as sexist violence is one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. In the country, gender-based violence affects all components of the society. But data from the 5th Demographic and Health Survey of 2018 indicated that 39 per cent of women aged 15-49 reported having experienced physical violence. Talking about domestic violence, more than four out of 10 women (44 per cent), aged 15-49 who are in a union or have broken up, declared to have experienced violence in many forms.
