Reconstructing NW, SW, Far North Regions : FCFA 15B To Accelerate Process

Cameroon in recent years has been faced with security challenges. Externally, Cameroon is battling on combatting the insurgencies of Boko Haram in the Far North Region, and internally, the socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions. Government, in an effort, has to restore peace and normalcy in the crisis hit zones has adopted a plan for rebuilding the destroyed areas. Known as the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of then North West and South West Regions, and the Special Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the Far North Region, they have objective of revamping socio-political and economic activities in the affected regions.
The State budget for 2023 adopted in Parliament and already promulgated by the Head of State considers appropriation funds to the tune of FCFA 15 billion for the reconstruction of the aforementioned regions. Simply put, a special account will be created and the money progressively deposited into the account which will be used for the said purpose. Hopes are high that the allocated resources will be used to facilitate the return to normalcy in the crisis-hit regions. Placed under the supervision of the Prime Minister, the two plans aim at realising projects in the regions with focus on three priority areas which include; restoring social cohesion, reconstruction and rehabilitating of basic infrastructure, and revitalizing the local economy. Government’s implementation partner is the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The FCFA 15 billion will thus be directed to rebuilding the economies of the regions whose security impact has been assessed by the government.
