Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs : Lionesses Yet To Resume Training

After the cancellation of the double-headed friendly against Senegal in November last year, the team has not re-started preparations barely one month to the kick-off of the tournament.
Since October 14, 2022 when the pairings for the 2023 Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs were done, Cameroon knew the qualification route will be deadly. This is as the team was placed in path A; made up of Thailand and Portugal with the winner expected to pick one of the three spots left in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this year.
The qualifying tournament which kicks off on February 17, 2023 in New Zealand is fast approaching and Cameroon is yet to resume bracing up to start the tough journey. A worrying situation especially looking at the calibre of opponents ahead. In November last year, 20 players were called up for a preparatory camp slated for November 3 to 9, 2022. This camp was supposed to be closed with a double-headed friendly against Senegal slated for November 10 and 13, 2022 in Dakar. But during the camping, the games were annulled at the last minute without any official communique explaining the reasons behind the development. Worth mentioning is the fact that Cameroon and Senegal were that picked the two African spots in the continental playoffs after failing to qualify directly for the Women’s World Cup via the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. These friendlies could have thus been very fruitful for the team.
