Senatorial Campaigns : Disbursement Of Public Funds Ongoing

The financial allocation is to help political parties in the campaign phase of the election.
Political parties participating in the Senatorial election have begun collecting financial assistance made available for them by government in accordance with existing legal dispositions. The funds are being collected at the Ministry of Territorial Administration; the institution that legalises political parties in Cameroon. A release to that effect was signed by the Minister, Paul Atanga Nji on March 6, 2023 informing political parties to contact the Political Affairs Division of the ministry (Office number 317) as from 11am in order to be in possession of the said funds.
As a result, all ten political parties competing for seats in the Senate will have some financial assistance from the State. Making available financial resources for campaigns is in accordance with Section 284 (1) of the Electoral Code. The said section states that the State shall contribute to the funding of election campaigns by defraying some expenses of political parties or candidates. “Public funds earmarked for the funding of election campaigns for the election of Members of Parliament, Senators shall be shared in two equal parts among the political parties taking part in the elections. The first part shall be paid after the publication of the lists of candidates to all parties depending on the lists submitted and endorsed in the various constituencies,” stipulates Section 285 of the aforementioned Code. This is exactly what the Ministry of Territorial Administration is doing. No particular date is being given for the disbursement of the first part of the funds, but what is certain is that, they are supposed to be put at the disposition of political parties before the midnight preceding the election day. Reasonably so because the law does not allow electoral campaigns on voting day.
