Highway Robbery : Lawmakers Tasked To Be Alert

Given the rising phenomenon of highway robbery in some cities of the country, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to be on the alert while in their respective constituencies during the recess period of the National Assembly. He was speaking at the closing of the plenary sitting for the March session of Parliament on April 1, 2023 in the presence of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute and other personalities. “At this time when you are about to return to your respective constituencies, I would, once more, like to exhort you to be on the alert. After the phenomenon of highway robbers associated with the northern part of the country in the yester years, a new form of armed banditry emerged on our roads through attacks on large trucks, public transport buses and the vehicles of individuals,” the lawmaker stated.  
While expressing satisfaction on measures already put in place by the government to render travelling on such roads safe, the House Speaker said the nation’s representatives would in particular, like security measures to be stepped up in the Littoral Region because of its economic importance. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril supported his point by noting that Douala, the chief town of the Littoral Region is a major economic hub, not only to Cameroon, but also to neighbouring countries and is a business centre for many investors. The House Speaker concluded by saying the National Assembly counts on the prompt action of administrative authorities, defence and security forces and the support of the population in order to keep these new breed of miscreants at bay.
