Maintaining Urban Road Networks : Prime Minister Instructs Concerted Efforts

The degrading state of urban and inter-urban road networks especially those used by lorries transporting goods to the sub-region are, according to the last series of concertation meetings, a call for concern. It is against this backdrop that the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, has instructed concerted efforts by various stakeholders, as he presided at the 26th session of the National Road Board on June 15, 2023. The poor state of some roads, the Head of Government said, causes traffic at the entrance to certain towns, increases acts of vandalism and a rise in accidents which are sometimes accompanied by loss of lives and other damages. The meeting, Joseph Dion Ngute explained, is to notify institutional actors on the necessity of maintaining bypass roads and reinforcing protection measures which he added justifies the theme of the session, “Construction and maintenance of urban sections of transit roads for goods on the national territory.” At the session, the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi presented the road network for transit of goods and protection mechanisms put in place. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès, highlighted specific modalities for the reconstruction and maintenance of entrance to town and urban sections of transit roads while the Minister of Transport, Jean-Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe presented road safety strategies for the transit of goods on Cameroonian territory, stakes and perspectives.
