Fru Ndi Laid To Rest In Baba II

He was posthumously elevated to the rank of Grand Cordon of Merit, the highest distinction in the Cameroon Order of Merit.
The remains of the now legendary opposition leader, John Fru Ndi who passed away in Yaounde on June 12 were conveyed to its final resting place in Baba II Village on Saturday July 29, 2023 according to his last wish, despite threats not to have him buried in his native land. The official funeral which saw the attendance of senior members of government, diplomats, businessmen, tribesmen, SDF party militants and sympathizers, saw the personal representative of the Head of State, Jean Nkuete; place the attributes of the Grand Cordon of Merit, the highest distinction in the Cameroon Order of Merit, on Fru Ndi’s coffin.
Fru Ndi’s final journey to eternity began on Thursday, July 27, with the removal of the corpse from the General Hospital in Yaounde. This was followed by an ecumenical service and eulogies at the Yaounde Sports complex. The next day, the corpse left for Bamenda, making stops in Bafoussam and Mbounda for party militants and sympathisers who had thronged the roadside to pay their last honour. The major stop over was in Bamenda where he laid in State at the Grand Stand for what was referred to as the ‘Last Rally’. And a rally it was indeed as speaker after speaker castigated separatists for calling for a boycott of the event and congratulating the multitude in attendance for their bravery and sense of recognition of the service of Ni John Fru Ndi to Cameroon. They all urged the population to uphold Fru Ndi’s legacy of peace, Statesmanship and believe in the oneness of Cameroon. He was credited to have opted for peace after the 1992 presidential election which his party militants say he won when he could have plunged the country into civil war.
