Fight Against AIDS : Efforts By Cameroon Lauded

The United States Ambassador-at-Large, Dr John Nkengasong made the remarks yesterday 7 September, 2023 after an audience with the Minister of State, Secretary General at the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh on behalf of the Head of State.

Contributions made by Cameroon in tackling the AIDS pandemic and other health concerns in the country were the object of discussions yesterday 7 September 2023, 2023 at the Unity Palace. It was during an audience granted on behalf of President Paul Biya to the visiting Coordinator of the United Sates Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS Globally, Dr John Nkengasong. The US Ambassador-at-Large, who is also Cameroonian-born Virologist, product of the University of Yaounde some 40 years ago had closed to one hour discussion with the Minister of State, Secretary General of the Presidency, Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh
Speaking to the press after the audience, Dr John Nkengasong said the meeting permitted them to examine the state of cooperation between the United States and Cameroon in the health domain.  Talking specifically about the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, he said for the past ten years the US and Cameroon have made significance progress in fighting the disease and there were signs that in the next six year it might no longer be public health emergency. Although there was still much left to attain such an objective, Dr Nkengasong noted that by mutualising their effort several other health challenges could be successfully tackled. Working through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) created in 2003 US has supported Cameroon to the tune of FCFA 3.5 billion and the positive evaluation they made of the assistance was an indication that by 2030 HIV/AIDS could be less of a problem and the health system in Cameroon better strengthened.
