North West : General Calm Reigns

One week after the official resumption of classes for the 2023/2024 academic year, the region is generally calm with students and pupils enrollment still to be improved.
For the past one week of schools reopening for the 2023/2024 academic year, the North West Region is reported to be generally calm. Prior to the school resumption, the North West Regional Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique announced a series of heightened security measures and instructed security forces and administrative authorities to ensure their strict implementation.
However, before September 4, 2023, the official day for back to school, some insecurity incidents occurred in the region. Two government Head Teachers from Mbessa in Belo Subdivision, Boyo Division were murdered by suspected armed separatist fighters after they attended a preparatory meeting in Belo. On August 31, 2023 gunmen killed the Superintendent of Police, Assila Angos Yves, in Bamenda.
There might have been some isolated attempts by armed separatists to completely halt effective back-to-school last week, but nothing serious to write home about. Life has been difficult for people travelling to other parts of the region as well as to other parts of the country as vehicles do not ply the roads. In towns, especially in the capital city Bamend, businesses were grounded until last Saturday and yesterday Sunday when they were opened.
Educational authorities are expressing hope that the enrollment situation in schools will improve beginning this Monday. By Friday, September 8 that marked the fifth day of back-to-school, the enrollment situation in both the secondary and basic education sectors left much to be desired.
