Maritime Security : Reflections On Sustainable Solutions

A four-day capacity building workshop opened on October 10, 2023 at the International Relations Institute of Cameroon.

Maritime security is one sector that is directly linked to development. Piracy at sea, illicit trafficking, unlawful fishing and the effects of climate change are aspects related to the ocean that need to be addressed for sustainable growth. It is against this backdrop that experts from member countries in the sub region are meeting in a four-day get-together to reflect on solutions to ensure maritime safety and security along the Gulf of Guinea. The regional workshop on ocean governance that began on October 10, 2023 was chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of External Relations, Chinmoun Oumarou on behalf of Minister Mbella Mbella.
Expressing the gratitude of the government of Cameroon to partners and other administrations for the collaboration in the past to ensure that high seas are safe for travel and the transportation of goods, the Minister Plenipotentiary said it is imperative for an updated and coordinated legal framework to be put in place for optimal security. The conference, he noted, will serve as a platform for the exchange of ideas of sea governance and enable stakeholders develop strong expertise in the said discipline. To the Secretary General, the current international and regional context marked by piracy at sea and the illegal exploitation of the ecosystem warrants for reflections with the objective of getting appropriate solutions.
