Cameroon – Chad : Reviewing Bilateral, Sub-regional Cooperation

Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has sent a sealed message to Cameroon’s Head of State, Paul Biya. The bearer of the message, Chad’s Minister of the Economy, Planning and International Cooperation, Mahamat Assouyouti Abakar, was received in audience at Cameroon’s State House Friday January 19, 2024 by President Paul Biya during which the message, whose details were not disclosed, was handed to the Cameroon’s leader.
Talking to the press after the over 40-minute audience, the envoy of President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno said he was bearer of a message from the Chadian Head of State to his Cameroonian counterpart, a message relating to cooperation in the CEMAC zone. Discussions, he said, focused on the state of the CEMAC sub-region and also on the fraternal relationship between Chad and Cameroon. “I really wish to thank President Paul Biya for the reception. We discussed common issues between Chad and Cameroon and issues of the sub-region.  As you know, Chad and Cameroon are two friendly and brotherly countries. We hope that the two Heads of State will meet soon to discuss in detail,” he said. Minister Mahamat Assouyouti Abakar added that President Mahamat Idriss Deby Into is very satisfied with Chad’s relations with Cameroon given that the two countries share a lot in common. It was thus an opportunity to convey to President Paul Biya best wishes from his Chadian peer and his determination to pursue the fruitful cooperation.
The special envoy from N’Djamena declared that he and President Paul Biya took time off to review not only the friendly and mutually-beneficial cooperation existing between the two countries but equally sub-regional collaboration. The two countries being members of both the Lake Chad Basin Commission as well as the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC). They therefore have the same challenges and need to work in synergy and move forward as one for their common good. 
Understandably so as cooperation between the two countries spans several areas and there are some ongoing projects as well as achievements to attest to the volume of the mutually-beneficial bilateral ties. For instance, the Ngaoundere-Touboro-Moundou road project, the second bridge over the Logone between Yagoua in Cameroon and Bongor in Chad, are some areas in which Cameroon and Chad cooperation is producing palpable results.
