Laparoscopic Urological Surgery : Initiation Phase Begins At Yaounde Central Hospital

A campaign to undertake minimal invasive surgery on some 20 patients with urological problems ended over the weekend in Yaounde.
An initiation and reinforcement campaign for Celisoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery in urology has ended at the Yaounde Central Hospital. In collaboration with medical experts from Italy: Professor Giovanni Ferrari and Dr Nyek Ntep Nicolos, the Urological Department of the Yaounde Central Hospital, with the Director of the Hospital, Professor Pierre Joseph Fouda at the head, successfully carried out laparoscopic urological surgery on some 20 patients with different urological problems. The campaign, organised by the Department of Urology and Andrology of the Yaounde Central Hospital, in collaboration with the Centro Urologico Europeo, took place from January 27 to February 2, 2024. Experts say the successful campaign session, marks the start to effectively carrying out such modern surgical sessions at the Yaounde Central Hospital.
Cameroon-born Dr Nyek Ntep Nicolos, who has been working with Professor Giovanni Ferrari in Italy says during the campaign, the medical team performed total nephrectomy (when an entire kidney is taken out of the body) on some patients as well as partial nephrectomy (when part of a kidney is taken out). Varicolectomy surgery was also carried out on some patients to remove swollen veins inside the scrotum, called varicoceles. Radical prostatectomy, in which the entire prostate gland is removed alongside its surrounding lymph nodes to treat men with localised prostate cancer also carried out.
Prof Pierre Joseph Fouda, who is also a urologist, said laparoscopic surgery (minimal invasive surgery) is done with the stomach closed. He explained that it is a procedure that can be used to handle prostrate and kidney cancers as well as varicoceles.
