Residents of Dirty South in the South West Regional capital awoke to the tragedy during the early hours of Tuesday February, 13, 2024.
Masa Jennet, a native of Menka in Momo Division of the North West Region and residing in a neighbourhood known as "Dirty South" below the University of Buea is no more. She died in her home by 4:00 a.m. in the early hours of Tuesday, February, 13, 2024 under the rubble of a collapsed storey building that gave way and fell off.
Neighbours testified that none of the nine university of Buea student occupants of the collapsed building were in, as they are all on holidays. The falling building landed on a nearby wooden house in which Jennet was sleeping. Her children were safe but the mother died. The incident pulled a huge crowd which came to rescue the other 11 victims involved in the incident. Four of the victims are hospitalised with serious injuries.
The deceased woman, said to be in her early forties has left three orphans whose father had recently died. The collapsed house in "Dirty South" of Buea has ignited debates about the hurried erection of tall houses in the city of Buea without appropriate technology.
