Senate : Aviation, Culture Bills Adopted

The President, Marcel Niat Njifenji chaired the plenary sitting of July 1, 2024.
Two legal documents were yesterday July 1, 2024 validated by Senators during a plenary sitting chaired by the Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji. They include the bill to authorise the President of the Republic to proceed with Cameroon’s accession to the International Convention for the protection of Performers, Producers of Phonograms and Broadcasting Organisations, adopted in Rome, Italy on October 26, 1961, and the bill to authorise the President to ratify the Air Transport Agreement between the government of Cameroon and the government of the Republic of Canada, signed on June 1, 2022 in Yaounde.
The Minister of Arts and Culture, Bidoung Mpkatt and the Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Ngalle Bibehe assisted by the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, respectively took turns to explain the pertinence of ratifying the legal instruments to the legislators.
Minister Bidoung Mpkatt took time to clarify lawmakers that acceding to the aforementioned Convention is part of a normative process aimed at completing the legal framework of copyright protection in Cameroon. The Minister further explained that the bill mainly governs protected performances, phonograms and broadcasts, while laying down points of attachment for performers, producers of phonograms and broadcasting organisations. The legal instrument as further explained, strengthens current national legislation on the law relating to freedom of mass communication, law on copyright and neigbouring rights, law on cyber criminality and electronic communication.
