First International Conference on Afforestation : Stakeholders Adopt Mitigation Efforts

Faced with several environmental challenges as a result of climate change, stakeholders came together within the context of the first International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation that held from July 2 to 5, 2024 in the Republic of Congo to brainstorm on its mitigation. External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella led the Cameroonian delegation to the deliberations in Brazzaville that ended with the adoption of several measures to mitigate the effects on climate change on the population of the African continent. He was accompanied by the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo.    
Resolutions adopted at the international meeting aimed at finding solutions to counter deforestation and promote sustainable development. Amongst the resolutions adopted include allocating more space to the planting of trees, the systematic replanting of tress once one is cut, improving capacity building on environmental protection and the sustainable management of forest resources. A global afforestation strategy was also established, with increased calls on growing carbon sequestration, preserving biodiversity, and supporting forest-based goods and services.
The gathering that brought together about 2,000 participants, including State representatives, scientific communities, financial partners, and non-governmental organisations is an initiative spearheaded by President Denis Sassou-Nguesso who in a message noted that “This conference represents a significant step towards a coordinated global response to climate change.” Endorsed by the African Union as the "African and Global Afforestation Decade," the conference’s ob...
