International Literacy Day : Cameroon Hosts 2024 Edition

Practical modalities on the smooth organisation of the event were discussed at the Ministry of External Relations on July 5, 2024.

The Republic of Cameroon will host the 2024 edition of the International Literacy Day. Instituted by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), during its 14th general conference on October 26, 1966, the 2024 edition shall run from September 9-10, 2024 and will be held in Yaounde. This was disclosed by the Regional Director of UNESCO for Central Africa, Paul Coustere, after an audience with the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, on July 5, 2024. The peculiarity of commemorative activities marking the International Literacy Day is to remind policy makers, practitioners and the public of the importance of literacy for creating more literature, just, peace and sustainable society. 
In a statement after the audience, the UNESCO Regional Director appreciated efforts by Cameroon in promoting literacy. "The Minister did us an honour by receiving us when we are two months to a major event which Cameroon will host the 2024 edition of the International Literacy Day. It will be from September 9-10, 2024 in Yaounde and the theme will centre on education and Multilanguage; the contribution of literacy to peace and mutual understanding," he stated.
