On August 17, 2024, the 44th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Community (SADC), Heads of State and Government held in Harare (Zimbabwe). During the highly attended Summit, two salient points were on the agenda. The handing over to the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, the post of Chairperson of SADC, and the withdrawal SADC troops from Mozambique. Though prior to the holding of the Assembly, there were a lot of calls not to handover the rotating post of SADC Chairperson to the Zimbabwean President due to his human rights record, discussions on the official closure of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) took center stage.
Even though much progress was made to keep the terrorists a bay, maintaining the troops has not been an easy task. During the just-ended Harare Summit, the plan to withdraw the troops was activated and member States commended for contributing troops, personnel, equipment and other resources towards the successful conclusion of SAMIM. Since the publication of the decision, member States are divided.
