Promoting Literacy : Transformative Potential For Dev’t

Improving the literacy rate in the country for productivity in various sectors is paramount to the progress of any nation.

Education is imperative for the construction of a country. Reasonable decisions are taken following objective analysis, which is based on the literacy rate of the individuals in the given society. Without education, there are many lapses that can be observed in society. In fact, literacy is the path way to development, as a literate population conveniently carries out research on ensuring its progress. As Cameroon hosts the 2024 edition of the International Literacy Day, the stakes are promoting a reasonable knowledgeable rate for the country.   Instituted by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), during its 14th general conference on October 26, 1966, the 2024 edition runs from September 9-10, 2024 at the Yaounde Conference Centre and holds under the theme; “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for multilingual understanding and peace.” Data from the National Institute of Statistics note that 88 per cent of the population in urban areas and 65 per cent in rural areas have access to education. 
The peculiarity of commemorative activities marking the International Literacy Day is to remind policy makers, practitioners and the public of the importance of literacy for creating more literature to ensure a just, peace and sustainable society. 
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, who is visiting Cameroon for the second time notes that Cameroon is amongst the 10 top countries in the world in which many languages are spoken. With regards to the theme, she noted that Cameroon is very much on point in promoting the education of especially the girl child and has a significant literate population.
