Cycling : Awakening At Last?

The recent performance of Cameroonian cyclists in some competitions is proof of an improvement even though much still needs to be done.

The 24th edition of the Chantal Biya International Cycling Race will kick off today, October 1, 2024 in Minta in the Upper Sanaga Division of the Centre Region. A total of 11 teams from Europe and Africa are taking part in the competition. The teams from Europe are Dukla Banska Bystrica (Slovakia), Flanders Region Team (Belgium), Team Clubs Defence and Team Bonheur (France). Five African countries will be taking part in the competition. They are Burkina Faso, Egypt, Benin, Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon. Cameroon will present two teams notably the national cycling team and the SNH Vélo Club. The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi presided over the ceremony to present the participating teams at the Minta ceremonial ground yesterday, September 30, 2024.
The race will have five laps and will pass through two regions. These include; the Centre and the South regions. The first lap will take place today, October 1, 2024 along the Nkoteng-Nanga-Eboko-Minta highway in the Upper-Sanaga Division over a distance of 100km. Hamza Yacine from Algeria is the winner of the 2023 edition of the Grand Prix Chantal Biya. Cameroonian cyclists will be seeking to grab the yellow jersey in this year’s edition of the competition. The Grand Prix Chantal Biya is an opportunity for Cameroonian riders to confirm their good results obtained this year. The SNH Vélo Club is the only glimmer of hope for now. There is need for more competitive clubs and more competitions in order to put Cameroon cycling among the top best on the continent.                                                                                                                                                                                         &...
