Elderly Persons : Let Their Voices Of Wisdom Be Heard!

The International Day of Older Persons took place yesterday October 1, 2024 with a call to highlight the abilities of the elderly in Cameroon.

Ageing does not mean becoming useless and cumbersome. Ageing is not synonymous to dependency and care. There is need to build sustainable and equitable systems that ensure the participation of older people in policy-making. It is within this backdrop that the Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irene Nguene, yesterday October 1, 2024, during a press declaration to commemorate the 34th edition of the International Day of Older Persons, called on public authorities and civil societies to organize activities, mobilise resources and focus on issues relating to the social inclusion of the elderly. “It is not only an action, but also an opportunity to make the voice of older persons heard, and to highlight their abilities”, Pauline Irene Nguene underlined. The day was commemorated under the theme, “The Part We Play”.
The Minister of Social Affairs said the aim of the theme is to promote the social inclusion of older persons and the essential roles they play in communities, while strengthening care and support systems to guarantee their dignity. She however lamented that the “Seniors” are often excluded in various areas of their daily lives, exposing them to the risk of vulnerability.
