International Translation Day : Diplomatic Significance Highlighted

A conference to mark this year’s edition held on September 30 at the Ministry of External Relations under the theme, “Translation, an art worth protecting within the diplomatic setting.”

Translation is a vital aspect in communication that enables information to be passed across. Given the importance of translation, the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution instituting September 30 as the International Translation Day. This year’s edition is being commemorated under the theme, “Translation, an art worth protecting.” At the Ministry of External Relations, activities are being observed under the theme, “Translation, an art worth protecting within the diplomatic setting”, with the Secretary General, Chinmoum Oumarou chairing activities on behalf of Minister Mbella Mbella on September 30, 2024. 
According to the Secretary General, the day brings to light the crucial role of translation, an art that favours the preservation of archives and diplomatic information. With the Ministry of External Relations having external services (diplomatic representations of Cameroon in other countries), the Minister Plenipotentiary added that the translation of documents in the two official languages of Cameroon facilitates the passing across of information to a wider public. The putting in place of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, and the December 24, 2019 law on the promotion of the official languages in Cameroon, Chimoum Oumarou, stated, are policies of the Head of State that obliges translation.
