A workshop in light ran from 3 to 10 September 2024, at the University campus as part of the PLAN4BEE project.
The eight-day PLAN4BEE workshop which took place from 3 to 10 September 2024 was aimed at establishing a collaboration network with honey and wild bee researchers, to support research into these valuable insects and show how it can boost agricultural yields. It held on the theme; “Monitoring agro-ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Pesticides and land use as stressors for plants, bees and pollination interactions”.
The workshop, which was sponsored by the Rector of the University of Ngaoundere, brought together African academics and researchers from eight African countries: South Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and, of course, Cameroon. The German partners came from four (4) different German universities. All of them are high-ranking researchers in the field of bees.
The German partners came from four different German universities. The German Research Foundation (DFG) funded this scientific visit as part of their partnership with African researchers. The German project leader is Dr Abdulrahim Alkassab from the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI), while the African project leader is Prof. Mazi Sanda from the University of Ngaoundere.
The academics exchanged ideas (in the classroom and on the field), in the presence of master's and doctoral students. This led to the establishment of partnerships, the drafting of research projects, the availability of laboratories for students and the co-supervision of scientific research.
After discussions, stakeholders decided to set up a biannual meeting between the parties. This meeting will give researchers a chance to think about all the different areas of research into bees and agriculture, with a view of developing this field in Africa. Prof. Mazi Sanda will put the finishing touches on the documents and get the ball rolling with the ...
