Medical Ship in Douala : 600 Patients Received Daily

It has been a hectic day for the Chinese and Cameroonian medical teams attending to patients aboard the Peace Ark (the Chinese Navy's medical ship), which has been anchored at Douala's seaport since Monday 7 October. On the fourth day of the medical mission on 10 October, more patients queued up to receive medical care.
The queues are long, with people suffering from a wide range of illnesses waiting to be registered, consulted and to collect medicines. While on the ship on Thursday 10 October, the various departments, be it ophthalmology, gynaecology, general medicine, paediatrics. Gynaecology, general medicine, paediatrics and even the traditional Chinese medicine department were busy treating patients. The head of the Cameroonian medical team on the ship, Dr Pokam Pius, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Douala General Hospital, said they were on the ship to assist and work with the Chinese medical team on non-complicated surgeries. He explained that the registration and selection process started a few weeks ago at some selected local hospitals, after which selected patients were asked to go to Bonanjo where the bus was available to take them to the ship.
He said they do their best to ensure that 300 patients are seen in the morning and 300 in the afternoon, making a total of 600 patients a day. He added that the patients are received in the consultation unit and later sent to the specialised unit. He pointed out ...
