Diplomacy : Philemon Yang Begins Multilateral Engagement

The President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly undertook a five-day visit to China and met with the Vice President of China, Han Zheng on October 31, 2024.


Within the context of consolidating the United Nations authority and promoting global governance reforms as the institution prepares to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its founding next year, the President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang embarked on a five-day working visit to China. It is the first official visit the Cameroonian-born Statesmen is embarking after taking office in September 2024 to the prestigious person. In the same aforementioned month, Philemon Yang chaired the Summit of the Future, which saw the UN adopting the Pact for the Future to foster global cooperation, transform global governance, enhance sustainable development and promote the modest use of artificial intelligence. To achieve outlined objectives, there is need for collaboration, hence the visit of the President Philemon Yang to China. He had a working session with the Vice President of China, Han Zheng and the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, on October 31, 2024. 
During his visit, Philemon Yang commended China for providing selfless support to a vast number of developing countries, and also pledged the UN’s continuous commitment to the one-China principle. The China Daily newspaper, which elaborately reported the visit emphasized on the fact that Philemon Yang expressed gratitude for China’s long-standing, steadfast support for the United Nations and hailed the country as a stable and constructive force in international affairs. President Yang added that China serves as a model for countries around the world due to its rapid economic development and modernisation policy.
