Ambassadorial missions home and abroad have increased as well as Cameroonians occupying prestigious positions in international organisations.
Increasing the visibility of Cameroon through an increased presence of diplomatic missions and occupying strategic positions in international organisations remain a pivotal policy of the President of the Republic. In the 42-year reign of President Paul Biya, the number of Cameroon’s diplomatic missions abroad has increased and more resident ambassadorial missions opened in the country. Cameroon’s name at the international scene has reached a significant height. History was made following the election of Philemon Yang as President of the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations on June 6, 2024. The United Nations is one of the most prestigious international organisations in the world and having a Cameroonian in such a position is a great diplomatic achievement. Other Cameroonians who equally hold decision-making positions within international organisations, include Hilarion Etong, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie, Mary Meboka, Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Leslie Formine Forbang, Judge of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal, and Dr. John Nkengasong, who is US Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator of the United States Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS Globally.
In relation to diplomatic representation, Yaounde hosts 39 resident Embassies and High Commissions, with the Indian High Commission, opened in September 2019 being the latest. There are 53 Consulates in Cameroon. Some 49 non-resident Embassies and High Commissions are also accredited to Cameroon. As concerns other diplomatic missions, the European Union has a resident Ambassador and Head of Delegation in Yaounde. There is a significant presence of specialised agencies of the United Nations.
With regards to Cameroon’s diplomatic representation abroad, there exist 36 ambassadorial posts and 27 consulates in Africa, the Americans, Europe and Asia. For multilateral organ...
