Tourism Sector : Stakeholders Enjoined To Enhance Import-Substitution

The Minister of State, Bello Bouba Maigari on November 21, 2024, officially opened the 4th edition of the Cameroon International Tourism Fair in Limbe, South West Region.

Stakeholders of the tourism industry in Cameroon have been exhorted to boost the implementation of import-substitution policy in order to leverage the sector for job creation and economic development. The exhortation was made in Limbe, South West Region on Thursday November 21 by the Minister of State, Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Bello Bouba Maigari, while opening the fourth edition of the Cameroon International Tourism Fair.
While acknowledging the importance of a tourism fair of such magnitude as a powerful catalyst for promoting Cameroon both nationally and internationally, Minister of State availed himself with the opportunity to underscore the importance of import-substitution as a key strategy not just within the broader economic framework but specifically within the tourism sector. “Import-substitution encourages the use of locally-produced goods and services over foreign alternatives. In tourism, import-substitution allows us to prioritise our unique offers and cultural heritage over foreign competition, ensuring long-term growth and job creation for our citizens. Ultimately, supporting our local tourism industry aligns with our commitment to sustainable development, empowering communities and fostering socio-economic growth,” Bello Bouba Maigari elucidated. The member of government also remarked that the theme of the 4th edition of Cameroon Tourism Fair; Valorisation of Tourism Potentials as Key for Job Creation and Economic Development in Cameroon” challenges all stakeholders of the sector to encourage tourists to explore and consume the local heritage in local restaurants and sojourn in local accommodations, thereby creating jobs, support local artisans and boost the overall economy.
